Icelandic Adventures

As a slight break from the norm and our usually African adventures Andy and I are off to a somewhat colder location! For those that know us it's' no secret that as well as our interest in wildlife we are both closet geology 'geeks' and fascinated with all things 'tectonic' and wilderness related.

Previously our interest in volcanoes has seen us visit the worlds most active volcano (Kileaua, Hawaii) on our honeymoon, as well as Europe's most active (Mt Etna) for our first wedding anniversary. So it seems only fitting that having just celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary we are off to another volcano hotspot, namely Iceland!

We have just a few days on the island, leaving tonight and covering two main locations in the South. After grabbing a hire car on arrival we are off on a road trip and have a packed few days which will hopefully include waterfalls, geysers, plate tectonics (!) and possibly a trip to the Westman Islands.

Of course no trip here could be complete for the Skinner's without a guided hike to the fissure at Eyjafjallajokull, the site and the 'outlet' of the famous 2010 volcanic eruption that stopped air traffic for days. Fingers crossed the weather allows us to go up on Sunday and see the Lava sill steaming!

Our trip is also (coincidentally) timed for when the northern lights (aurora borealis) are usually active, so weather and solar activity dependent we are hoping for a night time show as well. Let's wait and see....

So check back for some Icelandic adventures over the next few days....
